Claude Fable 5 requires 30-day data retention and is not available under zero data retention. If your organisation has ZDR, requests to that model return a 400 error. The way out is not giving up ZDR: 30-day retention can be enabled for a single workspace, leaving the rest as it is.

This is the detail that stalls a purchase in a law firm or a clinic, and it almost never shows up in model comparisons, which talk about price and context window. If you handle third-party data and have a zero retention arrangement, this affects you before any other feature does.
What does the 30-day retention requirement mean?
Anthropic designates Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 as Covered Models and applies a requirement to them that no other current model carries. In their words:
“Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5: These models require 30-day data retention and are not available under ZDR.”
In practice: to use that model, your organisation or workspace must have data retention enabled. It is a platform requirement, not something you can negotiate in the API call.

What exactly is the error?
If your organisation is on ZDR and you call Claude Fable 5, the API responds with a 400 invalid_request_error whose message reads, verbatim:
“In order to access this model, your organization or workspace must have data retention enabled.”
Worth recognising, because it is easy to mistake for a credentials or permissions problem and lose an afternoon there. Your key is not wrong: your organisation's retention configuration does not meet that particular model's requirement.
Can I use Claude Fable 5 if my organisation has zero data retention?
Yes, and this is the part almost nobody covers. You do not have to choose between the model and ZDR across the whole organisation. The documentation puts it like this:
“Organizations with a ZDR arrangement can make Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 available in a specific workspace by enabling 30-day retention for that workspace only. Other workspaces in the organization keep zero data retention.”
You enable 30-day retention only in the workspace that needs it, and the others stay at zero retention. It is done in Claude Console > Settings > Workspaces, on the workspace's Privacy controls tab.
That turns the problem into a perfectly reasonable architecture decision: one scoped workspace, with retention, for the specific case that needs that model; the rest of the business untouched. What you cannot do is enable it without knowing and find out later in an audit.
Does this stop me complying with GDPR?
No, and it is worth saying plainly because the headline sounds worse than it is. A provider keeping data for 30 days is not incompatible with GDPR: plenty of lawful processing has far longer retention periods. What changes is what you have to be able to show: that the period is in your record of processing activities, that the processor agreement covers it, and that you have assessed whether the data you send to the model needs to go in full.
The useful question is not "can I use it?" but "what am I sending?". An agent that summarises entire case files and one that only receives anonymised fields have the same model behind them and risks that look nothing alike.
And where is my data processed?
This is the other half of the conversation, and also official. On the available geographies, the data residency documentation says:
“Inference geo: Only "us" and "global" are available. Workspace geo: Only "us" is currently available.”
There is no European geography to pin to. Either you accept global routing — the default, which lets inference run in any available region — or you pin the United States at a 10% premium. On Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud the region is set by the endpoint and this parameter does not apply.
Again: not a blocker, but something to document as an international transfer rather than discover when someone asks.
What if I run a law firm or a clinic?
Three decisions, in this order, and none of them is about which model is cleverest:
- What leaves your system. Before picking a model, decide which fields travel and which are anonymised or stay put. It cuts the most risk and is the only part that does not depend on the provider.
- Whether you actually need ZDR. If you do and you want Claude Fable 5, you now know the way out: a separate workspace. If you do not, every other model comes without this requirement.
- Which paperwork is missing. Record of processing activities, processor agreement, and the international transfer written down. No model fixes that.
What each option costs per month
And a note that surprises people: picking a model without that requirement is not settling for less — it is also cheaper. With an ordinary small-business scenario — an agent handling 500 conversations a month — model cost lands like this:
